Most of us associate the name Godiva with Chocolate. We also may know that Lady Godiva road her horse naked through the streets of her
city. But few of us know the full story.
Lady Godiva was married to an 11th Century Lord of Coventry England. This Lord was planning on imposing a burdensome tax on the people. Lady Godiva, intervened on the people’s behalf, knowing that the tax would only hurt them. So when she approached her husband, he told her he would not impose the tax is she would right naked on her horse at mid-day through the streets of Coventry. Lady Godiva was an extremely modest woman. Her husband never expected her to go through with it. But she did.
While we don’t expect to see Tomi Olson riding naked through the streets of the 24th Middlesex District, we can rest assured that she will always put the taxpayers first.
Therefore it is fitting on more than one level
that Tomi has been nominated for the Lady Godiva Award, which is given to “inspirational woman around the world.”
Every two years Godiva honors women who exemplify the values of selflessness, generosity, and leadership.
Tomi has led an all-volunteer committee that puts on free outdoor summer concerts in a Town park for 22 years, doing advertising, fund-raising via individual and corporate sponsorships, mounting programs and organizing volunteers to help with every facet of the summer concert series. The concerts are a rousing success and include both evening concerts and daytime children’s’ concerts.
To be nominated for this award is indeed a unique and special honor. It speaks volumes about who Tomi Olson is as a person and her unwavering commitment to her community.
